Gold Brexit commemorative 50p coins priced at £945 sell out

The Royal Mint has produced versions of the new Brexit 50p to buy, including a gold coin priced at £945.

The new gold Brexit 50p coin has already sold out the day it was put on sale to commemorate Britain’s exit from the EU.

Exactly 1,500 limited edition gold coins, priced at £945 each, were released by the Royal Mint on Friday 31 January. They are now unavailable to buy from the website, having already sold out.

They bear the words, "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations," and the date of 31 January 2020.

The coins were initially planned to be released into circulation by the end of October, prior to the last Brexit extension. The initial design was dated March 29 ,2019 – the original departure date.

About a million coins had to be melted down and the metal put aside after October, until a new exit date was confirmed.

Limited edition sterling silver coins, priced at £60 and limited to three per household, as well as a non-limited “brilliant uncirculated” version, costing £10, are still available to purchases.

Brits attempting to purchase the coins were placed into a queue to handle the overwhelming demand on the Royal Mint website.

Additionally, 5,000 two-coin sets, made up of the historic 1973 50p that marks the UK’s accession into the European Economic Community, as well as the new brilliant uncirculated Brexit coin, have also already sold out.

However, Brits do not have to purchase the non-limited edition coins as they will appear in loose change, with three million entering banks, post offices and shops on Friday. They have no collectable value.

They will also have the opportunity to strike their own Brexit coins, following a tour of the Royal Mint’s south Wales HQ on Friday.

And a further seven million coins are expected to enter into circulation later in 2020.

Chancellor Sajid Javid said the coins mark the beginning of a "new chapter".
