Golden State Warriors center Marquese Chriss is likely done for the season.
Chriss fractured his right leg during a team scrimmage in Chicago on Saturday, and is scheduled to undergo surgery on it later this week, the team said on Sunday afternoon.
While the Warriors didn’t commit to when Chriss will return — they said in a statement that “a timeline for his return will be established” after surgery — sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania that he is unlikely to return this season.

Chriss averaged 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Warriors last season, his first with the team. The 23-year-old — who was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the No. 8 overall pick in 2016 — put up nine points and eight rebounds off the bench in their season-opening loss to the Brooklyn Nets last week, and had just four in their loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Christmas Day.
Without Chriss available, Golden State will almost certainly lean on rookie James Wiseman more moving forward. Wiseman, the No. 2 overall pick, dropped 37 points in the Warriors’ first two games of the season while impressing coach Steve Kerr.
“What I am surprised about, is that with so little practice time, two games in, that he’s as confident as he is out there,” Kerr said of Wiseman on Saturday, via NBC Sports. “I thought he’d be a little deer in the headlights out there, but he is fearless. So it’s not fear, it’s more he’s got a thirst to learn the stuff he needs to learn, so he’s going out there and scoring 18, 20 points whatever it is and then coming to the bench like, ‘Well, what did I do wrong and what do I need to do to get better?’”
