Gordon Hayward doesn't plan to leave NBA bubble for birth of fourth child

Gordon Hayward returned from a sprained ankle on Saturday night, and his presence made a huge difference for the Boston Celtics, who emerged from a 2-0 hole against the Miami Heat to take Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Hayward was a stabilizing force for a team that badly needed it, and he’s planning on maintaining that presence for as long as the Celtics are in the playoffs.

Hayward could miss birth of fourth child

Hayward confirmed on Saturday night that he no longer plans on leaving the bubble for the birth of his fourth child. After missing a month with an ankle injury and spending that time with his wife and family, they decided that he would stay with the Celtics in the bubble after he returned.

"I think that, obviously, wasn’t in the plan, getting injured, going back to Indianapolis for treatment,” said Hayward via NBC Sports. "I trust those guys with everything back there. Obviously, a little bit lucky that [wife] Robyn was there already in Indy so I got a chance to be at home and get great treatment but that wasn’t in the plan.

"Robyn could be having a baby at any point in time so I think it’s probably something that I’ll be here and, by the time I get back, I might miss the birth if she just goes in and rushes into the hospital. So we discussed it, we prayed about it, and I think it’s probably best if I stay here and help our team.”

Hayward’s wife, Robyn, published an Instagram story on Saturday that mentioned that her husband wouldn’t be leaving the bubble for the birth of their son. In early July Hayward had originally said that he planned to leave the bubble so he could be with her for the birth.

Hayward would have to quarantine for four days upon returning to the bubble, so even just 24-48 hours outside the bubble could quickly add up to nearly a week away. With four games left in the Eastern Conference finals and a possible NBA Finals appearance in the offing, he wants to focus on being with his team.
