Government postcode tracking website announcing tiers in England down

The Government website outlining which local area is in each tier has crashed.

The Gov.uk site allowed users to find out which tier their area is in by entering their postcode.

But the site, which went live just after 11am, quickly crashed as users scrambled to find the details of their area.

The message said: “We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later.”

The problems are still persisting.

A breakdown of the regional Tiers was also published alongside Mr Hancock’s statement on the Parliament website, but contained a series of question marks alongside some of the areas listed.

It was not immediately clear why the question marks were on the document.

That page has since been removed, and now bears the message: “Page not found”

Commons Leader Sir Lindsay Hoyle said it is “not acceptable” that news of the Government’s postcode checker to find out what tier local areas are in was revealed in the media before Parliament.

Labour’s shadow Commons leader Valerie Vaz said: “At 11.14am it was announced that you could find out which tier you were in via a journalist rather a statement to the House,” adding: “I think this is an absolutely appalling way to treat Parliament.”

Sir Lindsay replied: “This House should be informed first we keep telling the Government that is the way that good government should treat and respect this chamber. It is not acceptable to put it online.

“The only good thing about the Government is it’s crashed so it’s not helpful, so might be that we do get the statement first.”

He added: “This House should hear it first.”

It came as Health Secretary Matt Hancock set out the new tier plans in the Commons.

The new arrangements will come into force after England’s blanket lockdown ends. Restrictions have been tightened after Government scientific advisers warned that previous measures had not been effective enough.

Most of England is in either Tier 2 or Tier 3. London will be in Tier 2.

This means a ban on households mixing indoors and pubs, and restaurants only able to sell alcohol with a “substantial meal”.

MPs are expected to vote on the proposed new tier restrictions in England on Tuesday.
