Greek finance minister mulling speedy return to bond market

THE GREEK government is eyeing a return to international bond markets, with finance minister Yannis Stournaras saying a bond issue could come in the first half of this year.

Yesterday saw the Eurozone’s other finance ministers signing off on the latest package of bailout aid for the struggling economy, freeing up an €8.3bn (£6.88bn) tranche.

Greece has not issued any debt to markets in four years, having been locked out when the euro crisis and subsequent bailouts began, but Stournaras indicated that it will soon be ready to test the water with small packages of three and five year bonds.

Previously, Stournaras has said that the embattled Greek economy would need to have returned to growth before the country could market new bonds.
