Green: Rejuvenated Spurs can kick on after getting back to winning ways

Tottenham captain Josie Green believes her side can kick on and improve after claiming back-to-back victories to offset their disappointing start to the season.

Spurs added one of the signings of the summer as World Cup winner Alex Morgan joined over the summer but they struggled to find their form in the opening contests of the Barclays FA WSL and had a seven-match winless streak.

Karen Hills and Juan Amoros were sacked in November with Rehanne Skinner, who left her role as England’s assistant manager, being brought in.

Since then Spurs have recorded successive victories in the league and Green knows how much potential there is in the squad to be able to continue this momentum.

“It’s difficult to put your finger on why it wasn’t working at the start of the season,” she said.

“We were so close on so many occasions – we had three draws and we definitely should have won some of them.

“We weren’t a million miles away but now we’ve got some wins, we are looking to keep that form going.

“It was tough, you have ups and downs, but it’s a really good group of girls and there’s so much potential in the squad.

“It was just about keeping positive attitudes and mindsets, knowing that the three points was going to come and being patient.

“We had to keep working hard and reflecting on what we’ve done before, and how can we improve as a squad to get that win.

“You go through some hard times when results aren’t going your way but it’s the way you get out of those times that can really shape you as a team. Hopefully, this run sets us up for the rest of the season.”

Before the season started, Green was named as Spurs’ new captain for the 2020-21 season after Jenna Schillaci retired.

The Welsh international joined the club in 2016 and believes she learned a lot playing as vice-captain under Schillaci.

“It’s massive for me,” Green explained. “I had experience being vice-captain under Jenna, who is a legend and someone I learned a lot from.

“To be given the captaincy was a proud moment for me and all my family. I just want to do the best I can for Tottenham.”

World cup winner Morgan was not the only big signing to join Spurs over the summer, as Alanna Kennedy joined on loan from NWSL club Racing Louisville.

Australian international Kennedy already has 87 caps to her name despite being 25 years old and Green hopes the squad can gain insight from the duo.

“Their knowledge of the game and the experiences they’ve had are things you can’t buy, you can only learn that from other people, so that has been really helpful for everyone,” said the midfielder.

“They’ll be the first people to help someone in the same position or give advice on the pitch.

“We have quite a few young players coming through and they (Skinner and Morgan) are really generous with their time and advice. It’s a really nice squad to be a part of.”
