Gunman Held After Maryland Shootings

Police have arrested a man suspected in three suburban Washington DC shootings, including the killing of his estranged wife.

Eulalio Tordil was taken into custody without incident on Friday afternoon, police in Maryland said.

The 62-year-old federal protection officer had been the target of a manhunt since Thursday night, when police say he killed 44-year-old Gladys Tordil.

Officers in plain clothes trailed Tordil for an hour at a shopping centre on Friday after he was identified as a possible suspect in two more fatal shootings.

Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger told a news conference the officers were waiting for the right moment to safely make an arrest.

"Knowing that the suspect was armed and knowing he had made statements about what he intended to do we needed to make sure the public was safe when we took him into custody," Chief Manger told a news conference.

Earlier, Tordil was named a possible suspect in separate shootings that left two people dead and two others wounded.

The first shooting took place outside a shopping mall in Bethesda, about 15 miles northwest of the nation's capital.

Three people - two men and a woman - were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

One of the men later died, Montgomery County police said.

The other male victim was in critical condition, and the female's injuries were not life-threatening.

About 30 minutes after the mall shooting, a woman was shot dead outside a grocery store in nearby Silver Spring.

None of the victims have been named, and it was not immediately clear how they might be connected to Thursday night's fatal shooting.

Police in neighbouring Prince George's County said Tordil stalked his estranged wife to their children's Beltsville's High Point High School and shot her.

He also shot and wounded a man who tried to intervene, authorities said.

Tordil was put on administrative duties in March after a protective order was issued against him.

Authorities said he had made threats to "commit suicide by cop".

Some 14 schools were temporarily placed on lockdown after the two shootings on Friday.
