Let’s talk about gut health. While you might not think it’s that important, it actually is. A healthy gut contributes to your overall health, from head to toe. On this episode of The Wellness Lab, Dr. Alok Patel provides tips for treating your gut well, so you can feel your best.

“Living in your gut right now are over a trillion different types of bacteria, fungi and microbes,” Dr. Alok said in the video.

And there are ways to take care of your gut so these micro-organisms help you, rather than hurt you. Step one: Manage your stress levels. Easier said than done, right? But Dr. Alok suggests exercising, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water.

To give your water an extra kick, check out Golde’s Superfood Lattes. They come in three flavors: turmeric, cacao and matcha. But they all have turmeric at their base. While turmeric has been a part of of Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, Dr. Alok said that, “science does show that there may be some anti-inflammatory properties to this goodness right here.”

But even if you practice several healthy gut habits, things can still go awry.

If you’re ever feeling nauseous, that’s a sign your gut may be in trouble. As a home remedy, you can try eating a little bit of ginger or drinking it in tea. Dr. Alok suggests trying the Bigelow Lemon Ginger Tea with Probiotics. (He said it worked wonders for his wife when she was pregnant and experiencing morning sickness.)

If you get heartburn, you can try taking an antacid, like Tums. “It’s calcium carbonate,” Dr. Alok said. “You build up some acid because you had a fatty meal, or whatever reason it is, and Tums goes down there and neutralizes it.”

However, before you take any antacid, especially if you take them a lot, you should talk to your doctor. Antacids can interfere with certain prescription medications.

So go forth, take care of your gut. Your gut will thank you back.
