This Guy Deadlifted 500 Pounds Every Hour for 24 Hours

In a new video on his YouTube channel, weightlifter and strength coach Dane Miller sets himself the physical challenge of performing a 500-pound (226.7kg) deadlift. But he doesn't just have to do it once. Miller films himself over an entire night and day, with the goal of pulling 500 pounds every hour on the hour, totalling 24 deadlifts in 24 hours.

"I am going to be using straps, mainly because I don't want to risk blowing out a bicep or blowing out my thumb if I'm hook gripping, and I don't like not using straps when I deadlift," he says. He also adds that he will be taking "mini-naps" in between each lift, and that he is curious to see whether this disrupted sleep pattern will have any kind of impact on his performance in the lifts.

Miller starts out with his first lift in the gym at 6 p.m., and manages it with relative ease. Then, after the 7 p.m. lift, he packs up his weights in order to do the next couple of lifts at home so that he can spend some time with his family, before then returning to the gym for alternating lifts and catnaps. In order to stay mobile and aid his recovery between lifts, Miller does reverse hypers, split squats, and uses a massage gun on his hamstrings.

By the time the sun is up again and he's doing his morning lifts, Miller is feeling exhausted due to the lack of sleep. "I didn't think it was going to be this hard," he says. "The hardest so far, outside of the horrible fatigue, is my hands. Even using straps, my hands are killing me... My hands hurt, my soul hurts, my back hurts, my hamstrings are really sore."

Come 5 p.m., Miller triumphantly completes the challenge with his 24th consecutive lift, and states that the experience has reaffirmed his belief in the importance of mobility, technique, and rest in weightlifting.
