These hacks prove a potato masher isn’t just for potatoes

A potato masher may seem like a one-trick pony, but it’s actually a great multipurpose tool in the kitchen.

While a potato masher is typically used for, well, making mashed potatoes there are actually lots of dishes that could use a good mashing. In The Know’s Kitchen Hacks has some solid potato masher tricks that are a great way to get more use out of the common kitchen tool.

1. Ground beef

Use a potato masher to break down large mounds of ground beef. This will help the meat cook more evenly and it will definitely upgrade your spaghetti and meat sauce.

2. Smashed potatoes

When mashed potatoes get old, smashed potatoes are right there. These crispy baked potatoes are sure to be a hit.

  1. Boil small potatoes to soften them.

  2. Place the boiled potatoes on a lined baking sheet.

  3. Smash each potato with the masher until flattened into a disc.

  4. Coat the potatoes in olive oil. Add salt, pepper and fresh thyme.

  5. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 to 55 minutes.

  6. Dig in.

3. Egg salad

Expedite your egg salad with this easy hack. Use your masher to quickly crush boiled eggs. Mix in some mayo, add a pinch of salt and pepper — then you’re good to go!
