If You Had Bought Civitas Social Housing (LON:CSH) Shares A Year Ago You'd Have Earned 13% Returns

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Civitas Social Housing PLC (LON:CSH) share price is 13% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 10% (not including dividends) in the same period. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Civitas Social Housing's TSR for the last year was 19%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
