Hales And Roy Hit Hundreds In 10-Wicket Win

Alex Hales and Jason Roy both hit hundreds as England hammered a sorry Sri Lanka side at Edgbaston, winning the second ODI by 10 wickets.

Set 255 to win, Hales (131no off 108 balls) and Roy (112no off 95) shared in a record opening stand for England in ODIs and also set a new record-highest chase for a 10-wicket win.

Having hit Seekkuge Prasanna for back-to-back boundaries to go through to a third ODI hundred, Hales then launched the legspinner for three sixes in a row over cow corner in an astonishing display of hitting, while Roy notched his second century in the closing overs.

Sri Lanka earlier struggled to 254-7 despite winning the toss and choosing to bat first on a flat pitch - Yorkshire pair Adil Rashid (2-34) and Liam Plunkett (2-49) particularly impressive for the hosts.

England were equally impressive in the field - Roy affecting two run-outs, the first a fantastic bit of work from backward point to dismiss Kusal Perera (37) with a direct hit.

Perera and Danushka Gunathilaka (22) had seemingly got Sri Lanka off to a tidy start, picking up 34 from the first six overs - David Willey proving particularly expensive in going for 23 in his opening three.

Eoin Morgan made a change, bringing on Plunkett, who struck third ball, removing Gunathilaka - dropped on five by Hales at slip - with a nick behind off an attempted drive.

Plunkett then picked up Kusal Mendis lbw for a duck in his next over, before Roy's fine bit of work to remove Perera saw Sri Lanka slip to 77-3.

Dinesh Chandimal (52) and Angelo Mathews (44) rebuilt, putting on 82 runs for the fourth wicket but wickets again fell in a cluster as Rashid removed the latter - Sri Lanka's skipper top-edging an attempted sweep.

It was the first of four Sri Lanka wickets to fall for 32 runs, Rashid adding the strike of Prasanna thanks to a terrific diving catch from Willey at long-on, while Chandimal's 86-ball stay at the crease was ended by another Roy run out.

When Willey bowled Farveez Maharoof, Sri Lanka were in real trouble at 191-7 with just under 10 overs still to play, but a fine fifty from Upal Tharanga (53no off 49) helped the visitors bat out their full 50 overs.

It always looked to be too slim a target for England's lengthy batting line-up though, and so it proved, the hosts only needing to call on their openers.

The only real chance of note served up by either was when Hales was dropped having already scored 126 - Gunathilaka shelling a simple chance at point.

Hales hit 10 fours and six sixes in his innings, while Roy struck seven fours and four sixes as England cruised to victory with 15.5 overs to spare.
