The BBC's Happy Valley is set to return to screens after more than half a decade off air for a third and final series.

The BAFTA-winning crime drama, which focuses on Sarah Lancashire's Sergeant Catherine Cawood, will see the actress return to the fold for six new episodes.

James Norton will return in the role of murderer and sex offender Tommy Lee Royce, Catherine's nemesis.

And Siobhan Finneran, who plays Catherine's sister, Clare Cartwright, will also be back for the new series.

We've also been given a synopsis, which reads: "When Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir it sparks a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce.

"Her grandson Ryan is now sixteen and still living with Catherine, but he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father.

"Still battling the seemingly never-ending problem of drugs in the valley and those who supply them, Catherine is on the cusp of retirement."

Filming on the series will begin early in 2022, with creator Sally Wainwright writing all six of the new episodes.

"I'm delighted to find myself back in the world of Catherine Cawood and her family and colleagues for the final instalment of the Happy Valley trilogy," she said. "It's been wonderful to see the lasting impact this series has had on audiences all over the world.

"I'm thrilled that Sarah, James and Siobhan are back on board for what I hope will be the best season yet, and thrilled once again to be working with the wonderful team at Lookout Point, the BBC and our new colleagues at AMC."

Lancashire said it was "time to let the dog see the rabbit", while Norton admitted it was a "wonderful and daunting privilege" to return to his role.

Earlier this year, star Charlie Murphy (Ann Gallagher) revealed to Digital Spy that a third series was being written, saying: "Sally's taken up the pen again now, so yeah, we'll see what happens. It's really exciting. She's just focusing on it now, which is exciting.

"She's just an incredible writer. I just can't wait to see what she pulls out of the bag for it."

Happy Valley will return on BBC One, though an airdate for season 3 is yet to be confirmed. AMC Networks will air season 3 in the US and Canada.
