Former T.C. Williams High School football coach Herman Boone — who was portrayed by Denzel Washington in “Remember the Titans” — has died. He was 84.

Boone’s accomplishments were immortalized in the movie, which depicted Boone’s first season with T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Boone became the team’s head coach in 1971, the first year the school was integrated. Despite racial tensions, Boone was able to lead the team to an undefeated record and state championship that season.

T.C. Williams confirmed Boone’s death Wednesday.

Boone coached T.C. Williams until 1979, when he was fired for allegedly verbally and physically abusing his players. Boone denied those allegations.

Upon the release of the movie in 2000, Boone gave a number of interviews about the 1971 season, and his life after coaching.

Boone’s death comes just months after Bill Yoast, Boone’s assistant coach during the 1971 season died. Yoast — who was portrayed by Will Patton in the movie — died in May.
