Heron Therapeutics (NASDAQ:HRTX) Share Prices Have Dropped 66% In The Last Three Years

If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Heron Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:HRTX) shareholders. Unfortunately, they have held through a 66% decline in the share price in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 24% lower in that time. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 29% in the last 90 days.

Heron Therapeutics wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over three years, Heron Therapeutics grew revenue at 21% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. The share price has moved in quite the opposite direction, down 18% over that time, a bad result. This could mean hype has come out of the stock because the losses are concerning investors. But a share price drop of that magnitude could well signal that the market is overly negative on the stock.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Heron Therapeutics had a tough year, with a total loss of 24%, against a market gain of about 38%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
