Hertfordshire tops car insurance claim rates in the UK

People in Hertfordshire are more likely to claim on their car insurance than anywhere else in the UK

Research by price comparison site MoneySuperMarket found Hertfordshire is home to four of the five places in the UK with the highest car insurance claim rate per 1,000 enquiries.

The data looked into almost 18 million car insurance enquiries, broken down by postcode area, between January 2017 and July 2019.

Watford, Hertfordshire has the highest car insurance claim rate of 56.80 per 1,000 enquiries.

Chelmsford in Essex, which takes the second spot with 55.64 claims per 1,000 enquiries, is the only top five location not in Hertfordshire.

Hemel Hempstead takes the third spot place, with 55.51 claims per 1,000 enquiries.

Meanwhile, Stevenage comes fourth, with 55.50 claims per 1,000 enquiries, and the city of St. Albans in Hertfordshire completes the list, with 55.24 claims per 1,000 enquiries.

The Isle of Lewis in Scotland has the fewest claims per 1,000 residents in the country, with just 27.43.

This is followed by Kirkwall, the largest town of Orkney in Scotland, with 28.34.

The most effective way to drive down car insurance costs is to accumulate a healthy no claims discount, with safer drivers being able to build up their no claims over a number of years.

The research also found savings for each year a no claims discount is kept intact, with five years claim-free driving seeing drivers save 24% on average, compared with zero years.

Rachel Wait at MoneySuperMarket, said: “No claims discounts are a great way to save money on your car insurance, as insurers are keen to reward those who prove they’re safer drivers, and multiple years without claiming for damage is the best way to demonstrate this.

“It’s worth noting that when switching your car insurance policy, many insurers also honour no claims discounts accrued during your time with your previous insurer, so finding a better deal won’t necessarily mean starting from scratch.

“The number of years honoured varies, so it’s important to find out how it might affect you before you switch.”
