Back in December, it was revealed that the long-anticipated Lizzie McGuire reboot was sadly no longer going to happen and, to be honest, we're still gutted.

At the time, the show's star Hilary Duff told fans "everyone tried their best and the stars just didn't align" - and now she's explained more about why the Lizzie revival isn't going ahead.

Speaking on The Jess Cagle Show about the revival, which was originally set to air on Disney+, Duff told the host, "I think they are really trying to figure out what kind of content they want living on Disney+, and that doesn’t totally align with, like, where I see Lizzie right now."

"I’m very protective of her and they’re very protective of her," the actor added.

Prior to the reboot being abandoned, Duff had even asked Disney to move the show to Hulu, so that the show wouldn't be restricted to a PG rating on Disney and wouldn't limit "the realities of a 30-year-old's journey".

Duff explained her desire for Lizzie to be a real 30-year-old further in her latest interview, telling host Cagle, "The one thing for me was just the way that she [Lizzie] could connect with what was going on in people that were watching the show. And so, for me, it only makes sense to me to shoot a show where she’s acting like a 30-year-old in a modern world."

She continued, "There [were] a lot of creative discussions where maybe they were thinking that’s not quite right, and we were trying to make it work. And, you know, there’s always, like, lots of conversations, but I don’t think it’s going to be happening."

The Lizzie McGuire cast did reunite briefly in 2019 to start working on the reboot, before it was abandoned.

Speaking about reuniting with the cast and her character, Duff explained, "It was lovely to relive that even for three weeks of my life, because, you know, there was a point in my life where I couldn’t stand Lizzie McGuire.

"And I was like, 'I don’t want to hear that name ever again.’'And now that I’m my age, I’m, like, I love her."

Speaking about her love for Lizzie, Duff added, "She’s, you know, this is where it all began for me. And she is me and I am her. And I brought what I could to that, which was very much just who I am inside. And so to tap into that again, even for a moment, was really a great experience."

So, time to rewatch Lizzie McGuire all over again, then?
