Hillary Fails To Beat Merkel In Power Rankings

Which woman rules the world? Angela Merkel apparently, who has topped the Forbes Most Powerful Women list for the sixth year running.

The German Chancellor came ahead of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, while the chair of the US Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen, secured third place.

A healthy smattering of female executives from some of the world's biggest companies are included in the top 20.

Some of those flying the flag for women in business include the chief executive of General Motors (NYSE: GM - news) , Mary Barra - and other well-known names include the chief operating officer of Facebook (NasdaqGS: FB - news) , Sheryl Sandberg.

New (KOSDAQ: 160550.KQ - news) entries include the president-elect of Taiwan (Taiwan OTC: 6549.TWO - news) , Tsai Ing-wen, and the state counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Women from the UK don't appear to be well represented.

The first British citizen to appear in Forbes' annual list is the Queen, who was ranked as the 29th most powerful woman.

On the bright side, this is up 14 places compared to her 2015 ranking - coinciding with her 90th birthday year.

3. Janet Yellen - Chair of the US Federal Reserve

4. Melinda Gates - Philanthropist and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

6. Christine Lagarde - Managing Director, International Monetary Fund

7. Sheryl Sandberg - Chief operating officer, Facebook

8. Susan Wojcicki - Chief executive, YouTube

9. Meg Whitman - Chief executive, HP (Xetra: 7HP.DE - news)

10. Ana Botin - Chair, Banco Santander
