History Of Deadly Attacks In France

There have been more than a dozen attacks in France since the turn of the century, with the majority of them attributed to Islamic extremists.

:: Bastille Day attack - 14 July 2016

Some 84 people were killed and more than 50 injured after a truck was driven through crowds along the packed waterfront in Nice. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, 31, drove the vehicle into people as they celebrated Bastille Day before he was shot dead by police. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

:: Police Officer and Partner Stabbed - 13 June 2016

A terrorist, claiming allegiance to Islamic State, carries out the gruesome knife murder of a police commander and his partner at their home outside Paris in the presence of their three-year-old son. Larossi Abballa, a Frenchman previously convicted of taking part in a jihadi recruitment network, streamed a video of the fatal attack on Facebook Live.

:: Paris Attacks - 13 November 2015

Islamic State jihadists launch a series of co-ordinated attacks in the French capital that leave 130 people dead. Two suicide bombers blow themselves up outside the Stade de France during a match between France and Germany, while others attack two restaurants in the city, killing dozens. The majority of the victims were at the Bataclan concert hall, where several gunmen shot randomly at the crowd before taking dozens of hostages.

Three Americans and a Briton thwarted a potentially deadly attack by an armed gunman who managed to injure three people before he was subdued on a high-speed train passing through Oignies, northern France, on its way to Paris from Amsterdam.

A delivery driver thought to have Islamist sympathies was charged with murder linked to terrorism after the death of his former boss and an attempt to blow up a factory owned by Air Products in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier near Lyon.

:: Woman Killed - 19 April 2015

A woman died during what is thought to have been an attempt to steal a car amid an unsuccessful attack on two churches in Villejuif, a suburb on the outskirts of Paris.

:: Nice Jewish Centre - 3 February 2015

Three French soldiers protecting a community centre in the Riviera city were allegedly attacked by a man who had been apprehended and expelled from Turkey after being suspected of trying to join Islamic State.

:: Hypercacher Kosher Market - 7 to 9 January 2015

Amedy Coulibaly, who has pledged allegiance to IS, was suspected of killing a policeman in Montrouge, Paris, before taking a group of shoppers hostage in Porte de Vincennes.

Four of those hostages were then killed.

His wife, Hayat Boumeddiene, is still being sought as his accomplice.

:: Charlie Hebdo - 7 to 9 January 2015

A mass shooting at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left 12 dead.

The gunmen, Cherif and Said Kouachi, were French citizens born to Algerian immigrants.

The pair went on the run after the attack but were tracked to Dammartin-en-Goele where they held a man hostage before a shootout with police in which they died.

A man yelling "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) ran over 10 pedestrians with his van killing one of them, and then attempted suicide in the western city of Nantes, during a Christmas market.

:: Pedestrians Run Over - 21 December 2014

A man shouting the phrase "Allahu Akbar" drove his vehicle at 11 pedestrians in Dijon, eastern France.

:: Police Officer Stabbed - 20 December 2014

Three police officers are injured by another attacker using the words "Allahu Akbar" before he is killed in Joue-les-Tours, in the Loire valley area.

:: Suspected Copycat Attack - 25 May 2013

A French soldier was stabbed by a man in the La Defense suburb of Paris in what was suspected to have been a terrorist attack, three days after the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich.

French police investigated whether the two events were linked.

:: Jewish Day School Murders - 11 to 22 March 2012

Four people, including three children, were killed at the Ozar Hatorah Jewish day school on 19 March by Mohammed Merah, a French petty criminal of Algerian descent who cited Israeli action in the Occupied Territories as his motivation.

Merah is said to have turned to radical Islam while in Prison.

Earlier, on 15 March, he had killed two uniformed soldiers and on 11 March he shot a French paratrooper dead.

:: Spanish Guard Attacked - 1 December 2007

Two members of the Spanish Civil Guard are killed while carrying out surveillance on Basque terror group ETA in Capbreton, close to the Spanish border in southwest France.

:: Embassy Bombing - 8 October 2004

The Indonesian Embassy in Paris is hit by a blast which is claimed by the French Armed Islamic Front.

:: Nice Blast - 20 July 2003

Twin bombing on the regional directorates of customs and the treasury in Nice which is later claimed by the National Liberation Front of Corsica, France's Mediterranean island.
