Hockey Canada hires Irfan Chaudhry as first-ever VP of diversity, inclusion

Chaudry will lead the development of a strategy to "create and sustain a culture within hockey that embraces and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion."

Hockey Canada has hired Irfan Chaudhry as its first-ever vice president of diversity and inclusion. Chaudhry will start on April 12 and joins Hockey Canada from MacEwan University, where he most recently worked as its director of the office of human rights, diversity and equity.

In his role, Chaudry will lead the development of "a vision and strategy to create and sustain a culture within hockey that embraces and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion."

“It is an honour to join the team at Hockey Canada,” Chaudhry said in a press release. “This is an exciting time of transformation for the sport, and I am looking forward to continue the foundational work of the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group, and build a true culture of inclusion within Hockey Canada as well as the broader hockey ecosystem throughout the country.”

Chaudhry is best known for research on hate crimes. He was a professor of sociology and criminology at MacEwan University from 2010-2018. Chaudhry has also worked as a consultant and crime analyst for the Edmonton Police service and makes regular television appearances as a subject matter expert discussing the impact of hate crimes. He is also an advisor to the Canadian Council of Muslim Women and has challenged the Alberta legislature several times over appointments that would promote racism, specifically against Muslims.

“Having Irfan join Hockey Canada is a significant addition to our organization, and we are excited to have him lead the development of a vision and strategy to create and sustain a culture within hockey that embraces and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion,” Denise Pattyn, senior vice-president of people, culture and inclusion said in a press release. “His accomplishments and wealth of knowledge and experience in higher education and sport will be incredibly valuable to Hockey Canada, and we look forward to welcoming him in April.”

Chaudhry has been a member of the Hockey Canada Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group since 2022, tasked with the implementation and actualization of a real diversity, inclusion and equity strategy.

This is the next step in Hockey Canada’s overhaul, with a new board of directors, chaired by Hugh Fraser, implemented in December.
