Holby City spoilers follow.

Holby City delivered a shock for Max McGerry tonight (April 20) as she discovered the truth about her son Louis McGerry's recent thefts from the hospital – leading her to make a huge decision.

Viewers have recently seen Louis (Tyler Luke Cunningham) taking desperate measures to help his friend Vicky (Juno Dawson) secure some money, resorting to stealing equipment from the hospital to sell on.

With senior staff aware that equipment is starting to go missing, Max (Jo Martin) ordered an audit to keep track of the disappearances, and Louis' problems went from bad to worse after Josh Hudson (Trieve Blackwood Cambridge) and Jeong-Soo Han (Chan Woo Lim) caught him in the act of stealing.

In tonight's episode, the horrified pair threatened to tell Max all about what he'd been up to, but Louis persuaded them to keep quiet for now.

Both Max and Louis faced a devastating day when Max's mum Sanya (Dona Croll), who was recently admitted to the hospital, passed away after convincing Louis to arrange a DNR for her, leaving Max in tears.

When Jeong found Louis in order to tell him that his grandmother had passed away, he was appalled to find Louis stashing more hospital equipment in his bag. Sympathetic Jeong offered to lend Louis some of his savings until he could raise enough money to pay Vicky back what he owed her himself – on the condition that Louis would reveal all to Max.

Grieving the loss of her mum, Max faced another huge blow when Louis walked into her office and tipped a stash of medical equipment out of his bag, confessing that he was the thief she had been searching for.

At first, Max was furious and the pair became embroiled in a bitter argument, with Louis accusing Max of simply wanting to judge him and declaring: "I should have never let you back in my life."

But Louis soon decided to be completely honest with his mum, opening up to her about the struggles he faced living on the street and how Vicky had been his only friend, until he took everything they had stolen together and abandoned her.

"Vicky saved my life and I ruined hers. I owe her," he explained, answering Max's question about why he had never called her by telling her that she was never around and was too consumed with work.

"It was never about me," he told a shaken Max.

At this moment, Adrian 'Fletch' Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw) arrived at Max's office with security guards, as she had requested, and Max took a huge blow to save her son.

"It's never too late to make amends Louis – not if you really care about someone," she told him, before turning to Fletch and declaring that she was the equipment thief.

As she was led away by security, Louis took a look at her laptop screen and discovered that she had tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation gene.

After another meeting with Vicky in which he apologised to her for his mistakes, Louis had another emotional exchange with his mum, as she told him how proud she was of him while she was getting into the back of a police car.

While the shocked hospital staff looked on as Max was taken away, Donna Jackson (Jaye Jacobs) questioned who would be running the hospital from now on – with Fletch revealing that he would be taking on the role.

What will be next for Max and Louis? This isn't the last that we'll see of Max, so we will have to wait and see what lies in store...

Holby City continues next Tuesday (April 27) at 7.50pm on BBC One.
