Hollyoaks' Martine chooses not to have cancer treatment

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Martine Deveraux has decided she won't go through with any treatment options for her breast cancer diagnosis in Hollyoaks.

She received the life-changing news earlier this week that the abnormal lump from her recent scan was cancerous, and Friday's (May 14) followed up with Martine going to her oncology consultation.

While Martine was insistent on keeping the news from Felix and also hid from her family that she was due at the hospital, Celeste discovered the consultation in an open email on Martine's laptop.

The family had an argument in the village over whether to join Martine at her appointment, leading Felix to overhear that something was up with Martine.

Over at the hospital, Martine was admitting to Misbah that she was extremely sceptical about having to potentially undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy because it would upend her life.

Misbah tried to explain that Martine needed to speak to her doctor before rushing to any judgements because "the facts" were crucial when dealing with cancer.

"You are so strong, Martine. You can do this," Misbah assured her.

Later in the episode, a shaken Martine returned to the village to explain what she'd been told about her condition to the rest of the Deverauxs.

"We're looking at six months of chemotherapy. Possible radiotherapy and, more than likely, a mastectomy," she nervously explained. "They'd like to start chemo straight away."

When Toby suggested the news was encouraging, Martine shot back: "I said that's what they want. It's not what I want! I could go through all of those options and the cancer could still come back… That's why I have decided I am not having treatment."

She insisted to her family: "I am not putting you through that gruelling ordeal. I'm not having that for you, and I'm not having that for myself! I have made up my mind. It's the best decision for all of us."

The Deveraux family were stunned as the episode came to an end.

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
