Hollyoaks star Ross Adams on Scott Drinkwell story plans changing

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks star Ross Adams has revealed why initial plans for his character Scott Drinkwell were changed.

The actor was introduced to the Channel 4 soap in 2015, when Scott was brought in as the troublemaking nephew of established character Diane Hutchinson (Alex Fletcher).

Show bosses initially intended for Scott to be a nastier character, but the Hollyoaks team went back to the drawing board following feedback from fans – and Ross himself.

Speaking on soaps podcast Soap From The Box, Ross explained: "When I went in, Scott was written and originally intended to be this really bitchy type of character, who was actually really unpleasant and mean-spirited.

"Within the first two or three months of being in the show, I'd poisoned my aunty, I'd kidnapped a baby, I'd lied about having HIV.

"Honest to God, the tweets – the audience absolutely hated Scott. He was quite a polarising character. He was really, really big – larger than life and really openly flamboyantly gay.

"I think a lot of people perhaps weren't ready for that, at that point. I felt like the character would be more interesting if we understood why he was like that."

He continued: "I had a chat with the bosses about it and thankfully they took that on board. Slowly but surely, they started peeling off a few more layers.

"He'd had quite a turbulent life and then we started to see him having fun with Sinead. They were like a terrible two and got up to all sorts of mischief together."

Hollyoaks fans have seen a more vulnerable side to Scott in recent years and Ross won the Best Male Dramatic Performance prize at the British Soap Awards in 2018.

Ross's full interview can be heard in a new episode of Soap From The Box, which is released on Sunday (March 7). A new episode with former Emmerdale star Charlie Hardwick (Val Pollard) will go live the same day.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
