Home and Away – Lewis Hayes exit explained

Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Home and Away's sinister Lewis Hayes storyline has reached a dramatic climax on UK screens this week.

Lewis' revenge mission against Christian Green led to nailbiting scenes as he held his arch-nemesis captive in a disused ward at the hospital and tried to kill him with a lethal injection.

Tuesday's 5STAR first look episode (May 18) – which is repeated on Channel 5 on Wednesday – saw Lewis' plan fail when Tori Morgan found Christian just in time and saved his life by delivering CPR.

Lewis, meanwhile, was forced to face the consequences of his actions as his horrified girlfriend Jasmine Delaney encouraged him to hand himself in to the police.

While Home and Away bosses haven't made an official exit announcement for Lewis, he was always credited on screen as a guest character rather than a member of the regular cast.

Tuesday's 5STAR first look episode of Home and Away (May 18), which featured Lewis' downfall, aired in Australia on April 20. Since then, the character hasn't made any further appearances on Australian screens, where the show is currently running 25 episodes ahead of the UK.

This would seem to suggest that we've seen the last of Lewis for now, as his storyline has reached its natural end point, unless the writers have a twist up their sleeves in the longer-term.

However, with Lewis not being killed off and him sharing connections with characters like Christian and Jasmine, the door has potentially been left open for a future return.

As Lewis was a guest character, he was always brought into Home and Away with a specific storyline in mind.

This started in 2020's season finale when he caught up with his old flame Jasmine Delaney and reconnected with her.

However, what seemed like a romance-based storyline took a dramatic turn when viewers discovered that Lewis held a grudge against Christian Green for not being able to save his partner Anna when she was involved in a car accident a few years earlier.

Since then, the plot has followed Lewis' attempts to take revenge on Christian, hoping to get him fired for negligence.

One particularly memorable moment saw Lewis try to kill Ari Parata as part of his mission, knowing that Christian would get the blame. Ari was only saved when Mia Anderson walked in at the right moment and interrupted.

Although the murders didn't take place on screen, Lewis also killed three other patients at the hospital in his attempts to frame Christian.

In real life, in-demand actor Luke Arnold took on the role of Lewis during quieter months in his career at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking in February, Luke told New Zealand publication Stuff: "When I'm overseas and I say I'm an Australian actor, people ask me: 'Have you been on Home and Away?' and I've always disappointed them by saying, 'No'. It feels like I'm putting something right by finally coming and doing it.

"I think it might be one of the little gifts of 2020, suddenly finding myself back in Australia working on the most iconic Australian show, and I'm having the most amazing time."

While Lewis may have been brought to justice, he has left a trail of destruction in his wake. Jasmine finds the situation particularly difficult to deal with in upcoming episodes, wondering why her love life always turns into such a disaster.

Lewis was Jasmine's first boyfriend since the tragic loss of her fiancé Robbo in 2020 and she's unsurprisingly devastated over how things have turned out.

Jas also worries that Tori Morgan partly blames her for bringing Lewis into their lives. This fear is well-founded, as Tori does start to feel some resentment towards her.

Next week's episodes on Channel 5 see Jasmine, Christian and Tori receive the news that Lewis won't go on trial for his crimes, as he has already taken responsibility for everything.

Lewis confesses to his attempt to kill Christian, as well as the three murders he committed at the hospital to frame his arch-nemesis.

Lewis does not appear on screen for any of these scenes, but we do see how the Summer Bay regulars react to the news.

Christian's near-death experience also looks likely to have a longer-term impact on his behaviour. Tori is shocked next week when Christian admits that he feels sorry for Lewis and sees him as a victim – an outlook that Tori simply can't understand.

Tori gradually starts to realise that Christian has changed since nearly losing his life. The previously strait-laced surgeon starts to constantly seek the next thrill by skinny-dipping in the sea and driving dangerously fast along the road.

Christian also reveals that he has a strong memory of the moment that Tori delivered CPR, even though he was technically dead at the time. Tori insists that such an out-of-body experience is medically impossible, leading to an intriguing clash between the spiritual and scientific.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK), with first look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR. Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
