Home and Away's Lukas Radovich wants the show to tell more LGBTQ+ stories

Home and Away star Lukas Radovich has called for the show to tell more LGBTQ+ storylines.

The actor's character Ryder Jackson was involved in a storyline back in 2018 where his friend Ty Anderson developed feelings for him. Ty misjudged their friendship and moved in for a kiss, which was not reciprocated as Ryder is straight.

Speaking to the Soap from the Box podcast, Lukas praised the storyline and admitted that he wanted Ty to remain in Summer Bay.

He added that although the storyline was a "step in the right direction", he would like to see the show do more.

"The relationship that Ty and Ryder had was a great one," Lukas said. "It preached acceptance without having to preach, if that makes sense. I think Ryder's response was fantastic.

"It was probably the best-written story that I've had on the show. It was the most thought-out and it was the most drafts that we had for the scripts that we were using. It just made such a difference with the storytelling because it's a very sensitive topic, especially in soaps and especially in Australia.

"I think Australian television is quite conservative and for a show to be able to do that was really good.

"My only thing is, I wish Ty had stayed for a bit longer because I think it would have been great to develop that character, have him on the show, and have him be able to find love properly. But I guess it's a good step in the right direction and I'd love it to happen again.

"There are heterosexual kisses on the show and it's fine. It was a great step in the right direction but I definitely think there could be more."

Since Lukas and Ty's storyline, the Australian soap has had a same-sex relationship with Willow Harris and Alex Neilson. However, there was controversy when a same-sex kiss between them was cut from the Australian broadcast of an episode.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia). Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
