A woman wearing a face mask walks through the centre of Bradford, West Yorkshire, one of the areas where new measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Stricter rules have been introduced for people in Greater Manchester, parts of East Lancashire, and West Yorkshire, banning members of different households from meeting each other indoors.

Coronavirus infections are continuing to increase in England.

It comes as a government scientific adviser said the idea that “we can carry on as we are” and have a normal Christmas “is wishful thinking in the extreme”.

Prof John Edmunds, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said “radical action” would be needed to stem the rise in cases, particularly in regions with high incidence of the virus.

On Friday, the government said there had been a further 20,530 COVID-19 infections in the UK, bringing the total number of cases to 830,998. A further 224 deaths were confirmed, with the death toll now 44,571.

The list below contains the latest available data on seven-day infection rates in English local authority areas.

Watch: How will England's three-tier local lockdown system work?

From left to right, it reads:

  • local authority name

  • rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 19 October (this is how the list is ordered)

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 19 October

  • that area’s rate of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to 12 October

  • number of infections recorded in the seven days to 12 October
