From juice detox to juice cleanse, you may have heard of these terms as a fad and a marketing ploy. You now have companies and ‘juice bars’ that cater on in ‘healthy’ juices. You should note that a juice diet does not necessarily lead to weight loss. While they may not be all bad, you need to understand the how much of sugar does that fruit naturally has in it.

While it may seem that there are no hard and fast rules for determining the amount of sugar in a specific type of juice, there are still some principles that we can follow.

  • The first thing you should know is the difference between "white" and "black" in terms of clarity. If a product boasts about being white, then it merely means that there is less colour. If a product says it is black, then there are many colours. It is best to purchase juices with a little bit more black colouring than white colouring.

  • Next, look at the amount of fructose in the product. If it is a minimal amount (around 10%), this is fine. Just make sure that it is not the predominant amount of fructose used in the product. There are many juices labelled as having a high amount of fructose in them, which can be harmful in large doses.

  • Some fruits are significantly more or less fibrous than others. The fibrous content per serving varies considerably among different fruits. Like cranberries and prunes, some fruits have high amounts of fibre while others, like oranges and pineapples, are less so. You must avoid products that list "sugar-free" as one of their ingredients.

  • Pay close attention to the glycemic index (GI) of the food you consider eating. Foods with a high GI typically take longer before you feel the effects of the elevated levels of blood sugar.

  • Many people do not realise that an increased amount of juice intake will trigger increased insulin. If you take in too much juice at one time, you will reach for more snacks than usual. This can cause your blood sugar levels to rise unexpectedly.
