Hugh Grant has told how his infamous encounter with a prostitute came about after he watched one of his films and decided he was “atrocious” in it.

The Love Actually actor, 60, was arrested in 1995 when he was caught in a car with sex worker Divine Brown on Sunset Boulevard.

Speaking on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, the actor said the liaison took place after he had watched an early screening of his romantic comedy Nine Months, which was his first big Hollywood film and co-starred Julianne Moore, Tom Arnold, Joan Cusack and Jeff Goldblum.

He said: “The film was about to come out a week or two after that, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening.

"Everyone in it was brilliant, but I was so atrocious that I was not in a good frame of mind."

Grant — who was in a relationship with Liz Hurley at the time — went on: "I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch, and one thing led to another.

"I just was disappointed in myself."

"I don't know what was going on," he added. "It was called Nine Months."

Grant’s scandal made a huge splash in the entertainment world in 1995.

The Notting Hill star was followed by Hollywood vice squad officers who saw sex worker Brown get into his car on Sunset Boulevard.
