Yahoo Finance Taking off! Flights to Ibiza, Majorca and Malta soar in price as holiday hotspots are moved to UK travel Green List
Flights to Ibiza have almost doubled in price as Brits scramble to book tickets after it was added to the government’s green list.
Holidaymakers were overjoyed as they booked long-delayed holidays after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps added Malta and Spain’s Balearic islands to the green list.
It means Britons travelling back from these destinations will not have to self-isolate on their return to the UK.
Before the announcement at 6pm a direct return from London to Ibiza with Ryanair cost £104.79. By 9.30pm the same flights to return on July 7 cost £210.99.
However many will be left disappointed with the clubs not allowed to open and outdoor bars currently forced to close at 2am.
Local guidance states that beaches must close from 10pm. But museums and exhibitions can open at full capacity.
“Thanks to our successful vaccination programme, our intention is that later in the summer UK residents who are fully vaccinated will not have to isolate when travelling from amber list countries,” Grant Shapps tweeted.
“We’ll set out further details next month.”
Meanwhile, tickets for a return flight to Majorca on July 3 and July 10 leaped from £153 to £478.
A trip with the same firm to nearby Menorca rose from £132 to £312, while a flight to Malta jumped from £201 to £260 after the announcement.
The changes to the green list destinations will come into effect at 4am on June 30.
Mr Shapps cautioned that all the additions to the green list, with the exception of Malta, had also been added to the green watch list, signalling that they are at risk of moving back to amber.
Israel and Jerusalem have also been put on the watch list.
Twitter users were quick to mock the government for placing the British Antarctic Territory on the green list where the temperature is currently a cool -57C.
