Iconic baker to sponsor 3,000 mile rowing voyage across the Atlantic
SCOTLAND'S top baker is supporting a charity fundraiser that has been forged on the waters off Inverclyde.
Sir Boyd Tunnock, 90, is backing daredevil rowers Sabrina Simpson and Leanne Maiden as they bid to travel 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in a Caramel Wafer emblazoned boat.
Sir Boyd, said: “Only 13 pairs of women have ever attempted this feat.
“It’s a test of endurance and skill, rowing two hours on two hours off, for up to 60 days.
“I’m inspired by the girls and their tenacity, and I’m delighted to be backing their campaign by helping sponsor their effort."
Leanne and Sabrina had never rowed before they signed up to the challenge during lockdown in February 2021 and have been training off a pontoon at James Watt Dock in Greenock ever since.
The challenge starts at La Gomera in the Canaries on December 12 when they will attempt to row across the Atlantic to Antigua in the Caribbean.
Sabrina, 44, a pilates instructor, said: "We’ll eat freeze dried food during the challenge but Sir Boyd has promised us a huge supply of caramel wafers on board to keep us going.”
