Plans to build homes on the site of a former snooker hall in Darlington have been submitted to Darlington Borough Council planning authority.

The planning application is for the demolition of the former snooker hall and construction of 12 affordable dwellings in a mix of nine two-bed and three three-bed properties at Eldon Bingo Club, Eldon Street, Darlington.

The site is located in the northern part of the town, and currently comprises of a snooker and bingo hall, car park and small business premises formerly occupied by the Darlington Deaf Club and Deaf Innovation organisation.

The building, which is no longer in use, is constructed of red brick with slate roofing tiles.

Its footprint is largely rectangular, with a central projecting gable, inset panels, stepped eaves, and ground floor projections on the southern elevation providing entrance into the building.

The site is located within a residential area and is bound on all sides by terraced housing.

There are a number of other community buildings, including Rise Carr Sports and Social Club and Phoenix Centre further west on Eldon Street.

To the north and north west are North Park and North Cemetery, with North Park providing open space and recreational opportunities, including skate park and children’s play facilities.

The dwellings are proposed to be arranged in a terrace, consistent with the prevailing character of Eldon Street, providing a total of 1296.88sqm of accommodation.

The unit mix would include one two-bed wheelchair-adaptable house; three three-bed houses of 89sqm; and eight two-bed houses of 74sqm.

The layout proposed is in terrace form, reflective of the arrangement of housing along Eldon Street and neighbouring roads.

All dwellings would be two storeys in height and front onto Eldon Street.

Outdoor space would be provided to the front and rear, with front doors facing onto Eldon Street.
