IKEA has joined forces MUD Jeans, a Dutch denim company, to create limited edition KLIPPAN sofa covers made from recycled denim.
As part of the Swedish retailer's sustainability push, the covers contain 40 per cent post-consumer recycled denim – the equivalent to two pairs of old jeans. As well as this, each cover will help to save 27,000 litres of water and reduce the carbon footprint by 67 per cent compared to the industry standard denim method.
With most jeans ending up in landfill after use, this new initiative aims to cleverly reuse and repurpose. The covers — which can only be used on IKEA's famous KLIPPAN sofas — will be available in nine countries, including the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Italy.
'KLIPPAN sofa is an iconic IKEA product. By offering new sofa covers made from recycled materials, we can help customers to renew their sofa and reuse materials,' says Piotr Jakubiak, Deployment Leader at New Business and Innovation Deployment, IKEA of Sweden. 'We are happy to work together with MUD Jeans to make the KLIPPAN sofa cover with recycled denim. This simple action will give new life to the sofas and worn jeans.'
Malin Nordin, Head of Circular Development, Inter IKEA Group, adds: 'IKEA wants to grow within the boundaries of the planet. We believe all materials are valuable and should not be wasted. By joining forces with MUD Jeans, we can work together to secure new sources of recycled materials, and develop products using post-consumer materials such as recycled jeans.'
The limited-edition covers will be sold in selected stores. Contact your local IKEA for more information regarding launch dates.
