Russell Watson has claimed he saw “the light” as he battled his brain tumour, but said he didn’t go towards it because of his children.

The tenor, 53, opened up about the experience during an emotional chat with his fellow I’m A Celebrity campers.

He told the group he’d had two tumours and that the second, which he was diagnosed with in 2007, was “the one”.

“The first wasn’t life threatening, it was painful and I nearly lost my vision,” he said.

“The second one was holy s***, I went home, went to bed and didn’t wake up because of a haemorrhage. My assistant found me, called the paramedics and I knew I was in trouble because the paramedic kept saying, ‘Stay with us, stay with us’.

Vernon Kay asked Watson if he’d seen “the light”, and the singer replied: “Big time.”

“I was in the MRI scanner and I could see this long strip of light, like when you’re a kid and you used to keep your bedroom door open,” said the dad-of-two.

“It was a light strip and I was thinking if I go to that door I’m out of here and the pain stops and I’m away and all I could think about was my children and slowly slowly whilst thinking about my children the clatter clatter of the MRI came back and I thought, I’m going to beat this.”

Presenter Kay was moved by the story, and gave the tenor a hug.

This year’s series of the ITV reality show, which is once again hosted by Ant and Dec, has moved from Australia to Gwrych Castle in Wales because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the move from the Australian wilderness to the Welsh estate, the show is set to crown its first King or Queen of the Castle, instead of the jungle.

I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! continues tomorrow night on ITV.
