Impairment

A reduction in a company’s capital mainly due to a loss on an investment or the decreasing quality or strength of an asset. An impairment loss is the difference between the book value and the fair market value of an asset, and is considered bad news for the company. Assets can lose their value for many reasons including poor management, changing market conditions or increased competition.
