It’s ‘incomprehensible’ that Scotland have full squad while England pair isolate, says Petr Cech

It’s ‘incomprehensible’ that Scotland have full squad while England pair isolate, says Petr Cech

Petr Cech says it is “incomprehensible” that Scotland will have a near-full squad available for their final Euro 2020 group game tonight, despite Billy Gilmour’s positive Covid test, while England are depleted.

Cech will watch his Czech Republic countrymen take on a Three Lions side shorn of Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell after the pair were deemed close contact’s of Gilmour’s due to their interaction after full-time of last Friday’s 0-0 draw at Wembley.

Both Mount and Chilwell have been forced to isolate for ten days, despite the entire England squad twice testing negative.

The tournament schedule means that Gareth Southgate’s men must now beat the Czechs at Wembley tonight in order to top the group and give the Chelsea duo any chance of being available for the last-16, with their period of isolation due to run up to and including Monday, June 29.

While the absence of Gilmour is a huge blow for Scotland ahead of their must-win game against Croatia at Hampden Park, the other 25 members of Steve Clarke’s squad have been cleared to play, with none considered close contacts, despite Gilmour’s presence at the team base over the weekend.

Cech wrote on Instagram: “Please could someone help me understand how is it possible Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell - both with negative tests - have to isolate after they got in contact with Billy Gilmour while the entire Scottish team who shared the dressing room, hotel, coach and plane while travelling, dinning room, meeting room is allowed to play the game without any problem because they returned the required negative tests?

“What is the difference between them returning the same test results ? It is incomprehensible…”
