This Incredible 'Loki' Fan Theory Says Mobius is Stuck in a Time Loop

It must be pretty damn hard to write a good fan theory, like the ones we spotlight here at Esquire. A good fan theory has to be believable, of course. But also a little bit batshit, somewhere between oh shit! and I wish I had thought of that.

Friend of the brand TheMediocreCritic—AKA the Reddit user who predicted Luke Skywalker's cameo in The Mandalorian—is an individual who knows the great art of the fan theory. And he's back with a gem of a theory for Loki. Let's set this one up. Have you ever thought that something felt off with Owen Wilson's TVA agent, Mobius M. Mobius? The guy's having lengthy existential conversations and pounding soda while he's working on a job that essentially will determine the fate of the universe (as well as most likely, several other universes too). Why would he be so chill about it all? Well, maybe because he's done it before. Maybe even hundreds of other times, Groundhog Day style. Let's pitch it over to TheMediocreCritic, who honed in on Mobius's line, “I think I might have an idea of what he’s capable of.”

Here’s my theory, Mobius has had this exact encounter countless times with Loki. Using TVA tech, he’s been rewinding his interaction with Loki over and over to try to change the outcome.. Up until now, each time he tries to stop him, Loki ends up becoming evil or being reset. Mobius is giving it his all in a last-ditch effort to learn what makes Loki tick, so he can solve the eventual end of the sacred timeline.

This would make an incredible amount of sense. Couldn't you see Marvel going all Edge of Tomorrow on us for a grand reveal that Mobius has relived the same mission hundreds of times? Plus, it would explain why Loki tried so hard to show us how that rewind-y, handheld TVA contraption works. Maybe Mobius is just using the same tech on a larger scale. Check out the rest of what TheMediocreCritic has to write:

When each experiment fails, Mobius loops back and starts again. This is why he seems so bored, even when faced with the death of minutemen. He has been there a dozen times before but something is different this time. He’s looks confused about the kid in the Church, something’s different, the gum is different. This is also why he so excited when Loki reveals the new insights into Variant Loki, its new information, he thinks he's on the right track this time

This Loki is different because this time Mobius reacted differently and left him alone to see his whole life and death, he let Loki learn for himself what he becomes, that there was no “ glorious purpose”, ... and often when faced with our own flaws we can finally make real change. This is why “our Loki” is going to save the universe.

Again, it's totally plausible to see that Mobius would finally have cracked the code by letting Loki teach himself a lesson, rather than dictating moral truths to him. It'd be a surefire twist for the ages, if it comes to fruition. Until Marvel brings TheMediocreCritic into one of its writers rooms, you can follow him here.
