From Country Living

Stedcombe House, an exceptional Grade I listed William and Mary house, is up for sale in Axmouth, Devon following a three-year restoration project.

The charming red brick country house, which boasts beautiful views overlooking the Axe Valley, was originally built in the late 17th century and was rescued from an appalling state of decay by the current owner.

With eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, the 'classical post-Restoration box' is spread across two main floors, with a basement hall, attic, wine cellar, office and large kitchen and dining area. There's also an attractive stableyard with numerous outbuildings, a three-bedroom lodge, three walled gardens, parkland, pasture and woodland.

The flow of design is evident across all rooms with high ceilings, excellent proportions and fine period features throughout, including attractive chimneypieces, original shutters and elegant panelling, as well as substantial sash windows allowing in an abundance of natural light.

You'll find four bedrooms around a central landing on the first floor – two of these are corner rooms, the other two have adjoining bathrooms.

In the attic you'll find a further four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a box room suitable for storage or as a single bedroom, as well as access to the belvedere which has far reaching 360 degree views.

Stedcombe House sits privately in approximately 20 acres of grounds. As it's perched on the eastern slope of the Axe Valley, the house overlooks its own land and the rolling country beyond. Stedcombe House is also entirely hidden – you'll only see the house as you approach the ascending drive.

Savills property agent, George Nares, says it's "the finest representation of a William and Mary house I have been fortunate enough to visit". He adds: "Its symmetrical profile sits in a commanding position overlooking the beautiful country of the Axe Valley to the west, the dramatic Hawkesdown Hill to the south and further wooded pasture of the Bindon Estate to the east."

Stedcombe House is on the market for £4.5 millon via Savills.
