Insider Stock Buying Reaches US$823.6k On Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises

Multiple insiders secured a larger position in Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:BW) shares over the last 12 months. This is reassuring as this suggests that insiders have increased optimism about the company's prospects.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider Bryant Riley made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$578k worth of shares at a price of US$5.83 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$1.23). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. On this analysis the only slight negative we see is the fairly low (overall) insider ownership; their transactions suggest that they are quite positive on Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises stock. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
