Have Insiders Been Buying Precision Drilling Corporation (TSE:PD) Shares This Year?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Precision Drilling Corporation (TSE:PD), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.

Precision Drilling Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when President Kevin Neveu bought CA$268k worth of shares at a price of CA$2.68 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than CA$1.47 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 391470 shares for CA$842k. But they sold 3500 for CA$12k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Precision Drilling insiders. They paid about CA$2.15 on average. These transactions suggest that insiders have considered the current price attractive. Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own.
