Intermediate Capital Group's (LON:ICP) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth

While Intermediate Capital Group plc (LON:ICP) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 28% in the last quarter. Looking further back, the stock has generated good profits over five years. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 45% in that time. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 39% decline over the last twelve months.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 7.2%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Intermediate Capital Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 20% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 8% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 7.16 also suggests market apprehension.

It is of course excellent to see how Intermediate Capital Group has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. If you are thinking of buying or selling Intermediate Capital Group stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Intermediate Capital Group, it has a TSR of 73% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 6.1% in the twelve months, Intermediate Capital Group shareholders did even worse, losing 36% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 12%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Intermediate Capital Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Intermediate Capital Group is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those can't be ignored...
