Introducing Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (STO:ERIC B), A Stock That Climbed 39% In The Last Three Years

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ) (STO:ERIC B) share price is up 39% in the last three years, clearly besting than the market return of around 15% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 23% in the last year, including dividends.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson the TSR over the last 3 years was 46%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 23% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 2.8% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
