Investors push Chinook Therapeutics (NASDAQ:KDNY) 4.2% lower this week, company's increasing losses might be to blame

Chinook Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:KDNY) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the reality that over twelve months the stock has done really well. In that time we've seen the stock easily surpass the market return, with a gain of 41%.

In light of the stock dropping 4.2% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive one-year return.

Chinook Therapeutics isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last year Chinook Therapeutics saw its revenue shrink by 88%. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned a solid 41% the last twelve months. To us that means that there isn't a lot of correlation between the past revenue performance and the share price, but a closer look at analyst forecasts and the bottom line may well explain a lot.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. A Different Perspective

Chinook Therapeutics boasts a total shareholder return of 41% for the last year. We regret to report that the share price is down 12% over ninety days. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Chinook Therapeutics has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
