Islanders' Mathew Barzal hits home run to complete hat-trick vs. Capitals

Just because you don’t play in MLB doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Opening Day.

With a number of Major League teams starting their season on Thursday, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal channeled his inner slugger with a home-run swing to complete his hat-trick against the Washington Capitals.

With just over a minute left in the contest, the Isles’ star hit a walk-off to seal New York’s convincing 8-4 win over Washington. It was a good night for Barzal’s batting line, as he potted three goals on eight shots while also adding a pair of assists.

The offensive breakout was much-needed for both his team and himself as the 23-year-old had scored just one goal over his last 12 games. Barzal’s strong performance helped New York pick up an important win, bringing the squad within two points of the Capitals for first place.

Thursday was a much better day for New York hockey teams than it was its baseball teams. Both the Islanders and Rangers picked up victories while the Yankees lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays in extra innings and the game between the Nationals and Mets was postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
