Italy's Salvini says referendum could decide transalpine rail link
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said on Monday he would be open to holding a referendum on whether to press ahead with an ambitious Franco-Italian rail link that is currently under review.
Salvini, who heads the League party, told a news conference he wanted to see the so-called TAV line completed.
However, his coalition partner, the 5-Star Movement, has pushed for the project to be scrapped. The government is holding a cost-benefit analysis of the line and Salvini said he would be happy to leave the final decision to Italian voters.
"The only thing that cannot happen is that we carry on with this uncertainty," he said.
