It’s on: Colin Kaepernick moving ahead with NFL pro day on Saturday

After three days of hammering out details on the NFL’s surprise pro day offer to Colin Kaepernick, the free-agent quarterback is going forward with the league’s workout and interview session on Saturday in Atlanta, two sources told Yahoo Sports.

Despite the NFL declining to give a list of attendees and then appearing to scramble to piece together a workout over the past 72 hours, sources said Kaepernick will not pull out of the event. Instead, the sources said Kaepernick plans to put himself through a battery of tests in front of an audience that is expected to represent at least one-third of the league’s franchises. Kaepernick will also submit to a taped interview that will be distributed with film and any other data to every NFL team that requests it.

The decision comes after a roller coaster few days, following the league making the workout offer accompanied with a two-hour decision deadline to Kaepernick on Tuesday. The quarterback committed to the event under the condition that the NFL would provide a list of attendees, a move aimed at forcing the league to show the workout wasn’t a charade for a handful of low-level employees. But the NFL balked at providing that list on Wednesday, with the league denying that it ever agreed to the provision. That created some consternation for Kaepernick, along with the reality that a solidified throwing program and finalized staff to run the event hadn’t been determined by late Wednesday.

Ultimately, by Thursday the NFL settled on former head coaches Hue Jackson and Joe Philbin to handle portions of Saturday’s workout. Some parameters of the throwing script had also been put in place, with the National Scouting service still responsible for providing players to catch passes. By Thursday night, the NFL said 11 teams would be in attendance.

Kaepernick is attending despite a significant amount of skepticism regarding the event — including some from current NFL players who have raised an eyebrow at the short notice for the workout, as well as it being scheduled on a work-heavy Saturday for most of the league. But sources told Yahoo that Kaepernick wanted to showcase his commitment to getting back into the league, even if it took place under a warped timeline from the NFL.
