Singer Janelle Monae has announced she in non-binary on social media having previously revealed she is bisexual and pansexual.

The American star shared the news on Twitter as she showed her support to a trending meme.

The meme reads: “Are you a boy or a girl?” With a response of “I’m an experience”.

The 34-year-old quoted the post with the hashtag #IAmNonBinary.

The Hidden Figures star has previously stated she “only dates androids” telling the London Evening Standard: "I speak about androids because I think the android represents the new 'other'.

“You can compare it to being a lesbian or being a gay man or being a black woman... what I want is for people who feel oppressed or feel like the 'other' to connect with the music and to feel like, 'She represents who I am.'"
