Yahoo Finance Jason Garrett tests positive for COVID-19; Freddie Kitchens to call plays in revenge game vs. Browns
The New York Giants will be without offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in Week 15. Garrett tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Thursday.
Garrett will continue to work remotely for the Giants, but won’t call plays during Sunday night’s game. That responsibility will be left to tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens, who has a chance to get his revenge against the Cleveland Browns.

Giants coaches did not meet with players Monday or Tuesday due to the league’s updated COVID-19 protocols. Because of that, the team believes Garrett was not in close contact with any players, which means the Giants wouldn’t have to place additional players on the COVID-19/reserve list as a result of Garrett’s positive. The team is awaiting confirmation from the NFL to see if that’s the case.
Garrett, 54, joined the Giants in the offseason after he was fired by the Dallas Cowboys. In 10 seasons as the Cowboys’ head coach, Garrett put up an 85-67 record.
Freddie Kitchens has a shot at redemption against Browns
With Garrett out, Kitchens will get a shot at redemption against his former team. Kitchens spent one season as the Browns’ head coach. He was fired after leading the team to a 6-10 record last season.
During his tenure, Kitchens butted heads with multiple Browns players, including Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. On top of that, quarterback Baker Mayfield regressed, throwing 22 touchdowns against 21 interceptions.
With Kitchens gone, the Browns have turned things around. Mayfield’s numbers have rebounded, and Cleveland sits at 9-4. The team hasn’t clinched a playoff spot yet, but can inch closer with a win over the Giants.
If the Browns’ success is eating at Kitchens, he’s not showing it. Kitchens said Tuesday he “couldn’t be happier” for Browns fans.
