Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have officially broken up, the former couple confirmed in a joint statement.

Speaking exclusively to The Today Show on Thursday 15th April, the pair — who had been dating for four years — revealed that, after months of speculation, they have called off their engagement, with A-Rod then posting an emotional tribute to J Lo on his Instagram Stories last night.

The joint statement reads: 'We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.'

The sad news comes after rumours had been circulating that the famous pair had parted ways last month and called off their two-year engagement, with a source telling CNN in mid-March that the pair had split 'a few weeks ago,' explaining, 'It doesn't seem like they will get back together.'

A day later, J Lo and A-Rod released a joint statement saying that they were just 'working through some things' and had not actually split — the couple were then pictured spending time together in the Dominican Republic, where J Lo has been filming a movie.

The couple — who originally met back in 2005 at a baseball game, when Jennifer was still with ex-husband Marc Anthony — started dating 12 years later in 2017 and got engaged two years later in March 2019.

The couple had to postpone their planned lavish Italian wedding due to the pandemic, but later alluded that they may not get married at all, with J Lo telling Andy Cohen in an interview for Hollywood Life at the end of last year: 'We’ve talked about [not doing it] for sure. I mean, at our age, we’ve both been married before, it’s like, do we get married? Do we not? What does it mean for us?'

Our thoughts go out to both J Lo and A-Rod during this tricky time!
