Jess Glynne opens up on heartbreak of losing gran to coronavirus

Jess Glynne has revealed the heartbreaking news that she lost her grandmother to coronavirus, calling it a “horrific” time.

The Hold My Hand singer talked about her sad year and praised the care her grandmother received when her family were unable to visit her.

She told The Mirror: “It was pretty horrific. It’s been hard for my family.”

Glynne, 31, said the traumatic experience had made her especially cautious about following COVID rules to try to stop the spread of the disease.

She said: “I’m really cautious in my movements because it is mad serious. You see people being irresponsible and you can’t be.”

Pop star Glynne said her grandmother had been alone because she wasn’t allowed to see anyone while she had the disease, and called the staff who looked after her “incredible”.

She added: “It is just dark, people not getting to say their goodbyes.”

It isn’t the singer’s only brush with coronavirus – she tested positive herself during the first wave of the pandemic.

Now Glynne has launched her first Christmas single, in aid of the charity Jewish Care, which looked after her grandmother.

She recorded a cover version of Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas and paid tribute to the charity’s carer staff, saying they had been an “amazing support” to her grandmother and her whole family.

Admitting she “never pictured myself doing a Christmas song”, Glynne said she changed her mind about releasing a festive track as she wanted to bring “a bit of escapism” during a dark time.

This week has also seen Will Young diagnosed with COVID-19, and Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle told how she was so violently sick while in hospital with the virus that it gave her a bloodshot eye.
