Job losses: Major cuts since the start of the pandemic

No major employers announced sweeping redundancies on Monday after nearly 8,000 jobs were lost in big cuts last week.

There was even a rare piece of good news as Capita said that it would hire 900 new workers to help it staff contracts worth £355 million that it had won with Transport for London.

More than 167,000 possible redundancies have been announced since the beginning of lockdown in March as the pandemic takes a big chunk out of sales.

The Evening Standard last week announced a round of approximately 115 redundancies after its advertising revenue took a blow.

WH Smith, DW Sports and Pizza Express all said they were laying off more than 1,000 members of their staff.
